Facebook and Kids ? GoParents Connected Family | Connected ...

Facebook has been around for almost 10 years. So my questions is?are you on Facebook? Are your children on Facebook?

When we talk about Facebook, what is the first question that comes to your mind?

Even after all these years and countless reports, seminars and guidance about Facebook, it still may bring a sense of uneasiness. Maybe we do not know enough; there are several reports about the misuse of information on Facebook. And do we need some family ?rules? about Facebook?

I am sure some of you would still be asking: what actually does Facebook do? Who will see the information I post? How to invite my friends? Are my photos and content safe? And so on? and I personally know a few parents who refuse to set up an account, and I can understand that.

My children are much bigger now, but when Facebook started, my husband and I also went through a stage of fear about Facebook as well.

We would be constantly asking my children: who are you chatting with? What information are you sharing? Are you posting any private information on there?? Sometimes I had to sneak into their rooms and if the computers were not logged off, I could browse through the content on their Facebook page? For me, I am OK with that.

What is your responsibility as parents to monitor your children when it comes to posting content on Facebook?

Parental guidance is crucial when it comes to social media. You can?t stop your children from being engaged with Facebook or social media in general, because social media technology is here to stay. And it is something your children will be involved with.

I can?t tell you what my children were talking about on their Facebook, as they refused to ?friend? me? but I hope they did abide by the rules and boundaries that we set up about social media.

1. Never post anything that is too personal.
2. Be aware that any photos or news you share will be seen by all your ?Friends?.
   
3. Be aware of who are your friends on there. And make sure you can trust them.
   
4. TIME!! Set a time frame on how much time they are allowed on Facebook.?
   This can be a big issue, as I believe children can spend a whole day on Facebook?if they are allowed.?.
5. Make them aware that future employers will be browsing their Facebook profile as well.
   

It all depends on the age of your children. Different age groups rely on different approaches and the level of involvement from you. Have no fear!! You are in charge!
