NASA launches twin satellites to radiation belts

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? Twin satellites rocketed into orbit Thursday on a quest to explore Earth's treacherous radiation belts and protect the planet from solar outbursts.

NASA launched the science probes before dawn, sending them skyward aboard an unmanned rocket.

"They're now at home in the Van Allen belts where they belong," said Nicola Fox, the deputy project scientist for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

It's the first time two spacecraft are flying in tandem amid the punishing radiation belts of Earth, brimming with highly charged particles capable of wrecking satellites.

These new satellites ? shielded with thick aluminum ? are designed to withstand an onslaught of cosmic rays for the next two years.

"We're going to a place that other missions try to avoid and we need to live there for two years. That's one of our biggest challenges," said Richard Fitzgerald, project manager for Johns Hopkins.

Fitzgerald wore a black tuxedo for the big event, "my good-luck tux." It's the same suit he wore for the launch of another set of twin science satellites that still are going strong after 10 years. "I'm hoping for the same" with these Radiation Belt Storm Probes, he said.

The Johns Hopkins lab built the radiation belt probes for NASA, and is operating them from Maryland following a week of launch delays.

Scientists expect the $686 million mission to shed light on how the sun affects the Van Allen radiation belts, named after the astrophysicist who discovered them a half-century ago.

Earth's two doughnut-shaped radiation belts stretch thousands of miles into space; these inner and outer belts are full of high-energy particles from the sun and elsewhere in the cosmos, trapped by Earth's magnetic field.

Normally, the belts remain well above the International Space Station and low-flying satellites. But the belts can expand during solar storms right into the paths of orbiting spacecraft. If severe enough, the storms can cripple satellites and endanger astronauts, and disrupt power and communications on the ground.

The goal of this mission is to improve space weather forecasting.

"The Earth responds to what's coming from the sun, so we say, 'If the sun sneezes, the Earth catches a cold,' " said Nicola Fox, deputy project scientist for Johns Hopkins. The symptoms vary widely and need to be better understood, she said.

Science instruments aboard the nearly identical spacecraft will measure the high-energy particles coursing through the radiation belts and numbering in the trillions.

The satellites will traverse both the inner and outer belts, flying as close as 300 miles to Earth and as far away as almost 20,000 miles, and occasionally lapping one another. At times, the probes will be 100 miles apart, at other times 24,000 miles apart, or three of Earth's diameters.

Fox said the beauty of having two satellites is that scientists will see whether energy disturbances affect just one or both, allowing for measurements over space as well as time.

Earth is hardly alone in this curious setup.

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune also have magnetic fields and radiation belts. While the processes are understood, mysteries abound. Fox likens it to making a cake: "You know all the ingredients but you're not quite sure of the proportions of each piece in each given storm."

Compared with the simple Geiger counter on America's first satellite Explorer 1, which uncovered the radiation belts, these two new 1,400-pound probes contain the latest in microelectronics. Each satellite has eight science instruments.

"This is a phenomenal set of instruments," said University of Iowa physicist Craig Kletzing, a principal investigator. "This is the best that's ever been flown in the radiation belts, and we'll make tremendous advances."

The University of Iowa is where James Van Allen spent his famed career. His 1958 discovery of the radiation belts are said to be the first scientific discovery of the Space Age.

Sarah Van Allen, his daughter, was at the mission control center in Laurel, Md., for Thursday's launch.

For now, these newest satellites are called A and B. After a two-month checkout, NASA plans to give them real names.

Perhaps Van and Allen? That's what Fox calls them "because they're close to my heart."

Van Allen was 91 and dying when the Radiation Belt Storm Probes won approval in 2006. How would the late Van Allen feel about the endeavor?

"Very pumped up," Kletzing said.

It took NASA three tries to launch the spacecraft. Last week's attempts were thwarted by trouble with a tracking beacon on the Atlas V rocket and then stormy weather. NASA opted to wait until the passage of Hurricane Isaac before trying again.

In only 14, but I really want to be an interior designer when I grow up. I take Home Ec and journalism for students of mine that does not really help me ? But I was wondering if anyone knew what I was doing to learning about interior design and the things that I should get a head start on could? Thank you very much =) Best Answer :

basically anything that you can do without their high school diploma, is read. keep up with current trends, hot designers, and other things through journals. a great place to find them is online! Check out design books, magazines, etc to keep. You miles ahead when it comes to school design. You can also try to find a job in a place like a furniture store or paint store. even an antique shop or something like that will help you to know about the different styles make, design, color palettes, and many other cosas.cuando graduate high school, go to a design school. I do not know where or how far you are willing to live, to go to college, but I recommend the Art Institutes International. I live in Minneapolis, MN and place has a great interior design program.

Turing machine gives order to chaotic Penrose universe

A theoretical computer built in a mixed-up mathematical universe might not sound like the most practical invention. But the discovery shows that computation can turn up in the most unlikely places, which in turn might spur more realistic models of physical and chemical processes.

The computer is what's known as a universal Turing machine, a theoretical construct invented by mathematician Alan Turing that's capable of simulating any computer algorithm. The computers we use today are approximations of Turing's idealised machine.

Katsunobu Imai at Hiroshima University in Japan and colleagues have found a way to bring Turing's computational order to an irregular universe based on Penrose tiles ? a feat that was considered highly improbable until now.

Named after mathematician Roger Penrose, the tiling is an arrangement of two four-sided shapes called a kite and a dart, which covers a two-dimensional plane, without repeating, to create a constantly shifting pattern.

The team used this mathematical playing field to make a cellular automaton, a two-dimensional universe in which patterns of cells evolve to create complex structures. The most famous cellular automaton is the Game of Life, a grid of identical square cells that can either be "alive" or "dead".

Players have created universal Turing machines in the Game of Life's orderly, two-state universe. But making one work in a more chaotic Penrose universe presented a greater challenge to Imai's team.

Wired tiles

The scientists constructed logic gates for their universal Turing machine by assigning one of eight different states to each Penrose tile, with the states changing over time according to a few simple rules.

Tiles in the first state act as wires that transmit signals between the logic gates, with the signal itself consisting of either a "front" or "back" state. Four other states manage the redirecting of the signal within the logic gates, while the final state is simply an unused background to keep the various states separate.

At first it wasn't clear whether Imai's team would be able to keep their logic gates wired together, as the gates can only appear in certain places where the tiles come together in the right way.

However, the team found that a long enough wire would always make the connection, proving that a universal Turing machine is possible in the Penrose universe.

Imai will present the work next month at the Automata conference in La Marana on the French island of Corsica.

More natural modelling

Earlier this month, researchers also made the unexpected discovery of a highly repetitive object called a glider in the Penrose universeMovie Camera.

Gliders actually form the basis for a universal Turing machine in the Game of Life, shuttling information around in place of wires. Imai didn't know about the Penrose glider at the time, so he was forced to take an alternative approach.

Susan Stepney, a computer scientist at the University of York, UK, says Imai's creation is not very practical as it requires a theoretically infinite number of cells to function.

Still, Imai says he was inspired to try and make a universal Turing machine because he wanted to probe the limits of complexity in a Penrose universe. Just showing that it's possible could open the door to other, more useful applications, he says.

"Cellular automata are widely used for modelling physical and chemical phenomena, but sometimes the resulting patterns are quite artificial," he explains. While grid-based patterns don't really reflect the natural world, the irregular patterns in Penrose tiling could provide a better model.

MGM Announces "James Bond Day"

After surviving MGM teetering on the brink of ruin, and a ton of uncertainty surrounding his newest film, you could say that James Bond deserves a day off. Seeing as how it?s his 50th birthday next month MGM agrees, as do the other distribution partners they?ve had over the years, and have thereby dubbed October the 5th Global James Bond Day. To celebrate such a rousing occasion they have prepared several different events for fans of all ages to experience.

The main focus of James Bond Day will be preparation for two important releases (one theatrical and one home video) of James Bond properties, but more importantly it?s a chance for MGM to celebrate, with their fans, the catalogue of James Bond films.

MGM plans to kick off James Bond Day with the release of Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story, a new documentary centered on the three men who helped bring James Bond to the silver screen: producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, along with Bond author Ian Fleming. The studio says that specific details will follow based on country, which suggests the film won?t just be distributed digitally.

Along with the release of the documentary, MGM will be holding a global survey to determine specific region?s favorite Bond film. Most would point to one of Connery?s Bond outings as their favorite, but the newer Brosnan and Craig iterations have certainly built solid fan bases as well.

In addition to the new documentary and survey, James Bond Day will also be celebrated with specific events in major urban hubs around the world. Los Angeles will play host to a ?Music of Bond? night at the Academy of Arts and Sciences (home of the Oscars), New York will feature a film retrospective at their Museum of Modern Art, and a ?Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond Style? fashion exhibition will be held at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In addition, Christie?s in London will be hosting a special auction dedicated to 50 lots of Bond film memorabilia with the proceeds going towards twelve different charities. No word on if any of Bond?s classic cars will be up for sale, but we wouldn?t be surprised if one or two of his clever gadgets were.

As one of the longest running film franchises in history, it?s surprising James Bond hasn?t been treated to his own day sooner. With the release of his newest adventure, Skyfall, set for later this year, and the unveiling of a comprehensive Bond Blu-Ray set coming even sooner than that it was perfect timing that an event like this be unveiled.

While specific countries will be receiving more Bond-centric activities than others, any fan of Roger Moore, Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig can partake in that global survey to determine their region?s favorite bond film. And once decided they can pop that particular Blu-ray from the set into their player and rediscover Arthur Fleming?s 007 all over again.

James Bond?s newest theatrical adventure, Skfall, premieres on November 9th, while the aforementioned Bond 50th Anniversary Set releases on September 25th.

Do you have hidden treasure in your attic? Maybe your Kansas City home is decorated with family heirlooms and hand-me-down items. Perhaps you love scouring yard sales and second-hand stores, or you have hung on to old paintings from a family member. Well, you?ll surely be examining those items with a more critical eye after reading this incredible story.

Time Magazine reports that a possible da Vinci masterpiece has been found in the home of a Scottish woman. Fiona McLaren was never particularly fond of a particular painting given to her father by one of his patients years ago. In fact, when she remodeled her home, she didn?t even bother to cover it up, resulting in a few paint splashes on the piece. Later, however, she decided to get it appraised, and was shocked by the result.

The Sotheby?s appraiser gasped aloud when he saw the 500 year old painting. It could very well be a painting by da Vinci himself, worth upwards of $150 million. The painting is still being verified, but obvious similarities exist between the female figure in this mystery painting, believed to portray Mary Magdalen, and figures in Madonna of the Rocks and The Last Supper.

While it may seem unlikely, there have actually been many important artworks, documents, and antiquities discovered in people?s homes.
