PM?s Office permanent secretary Tongthong Chandrangsu said the proposed measures would include mental and physical rehabilitation, additional welfare, better education and housing, and frequent visits to villages by provincial and national government figures to create better understanding among local people.

The proposal emerged from a meeting of the committee on rehabilitation of people affected by the southern unrest on Wednesday chaired by Justice Minister Pracha Promnok, Thai News Agency reported.

The meeting marked the first anniversary of the committee. Tongthong said the committee, though criticised by some, has also received compliments for its achievements.

He said the government would resort to negotiations and peaceful solutions to the problems in the three southernmost provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala.

Pol Col Tawee Sodsong, secretary general of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre, said many southerners have been detained without specific charges against them, adding that the authorities have already assisted 200-300 detainees in this category.

Such detainees will be compensated if they had not violated the emergency decree or martial law, he said.

DOHA: The wife of the Malaysian Prime Minister, Rosmah Mansor, yesterday urged women to take a more active role in their institutions and organisations in order to strengthen business ethics.

She said women could play an important role in strengthening ethics in business because their nature of being mothers and nurturers required that they imbued trust in the relationship they built and developed.

?As mothers, we have a responsibility and opportunity to imbue the right values and inculcate morally sound behaviour in our children. These are values and behaviours which will make them ethical people.Further, our roles that include multi-tasking between the home and the workplace demands that we deliver promises to the people who depend and count on us,? she said in a keynote address titled ?Role of Women in Strengthening Business Ethics? at the Qatari Businesswomen Association?s programme at the Inside Investor Forum Asia 2012, here.

The two-day forum from Monday, organised by the international media group and consultancy, Inside Investor, is a high-level business event which brings together heads of state, investors and top-level company executives from the ASEAN and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to identify investment opportunities in the two regions.

Rosmah said women should extend these qualities in ensuring that the companies they worked for delivered on their promises and upheld governance and ethics at all levels of the organisation at all times.

She said the rising participation of women in the global workforce also provided an opportunity for women to play a bigger role in strengthening business ethics.

?There are many reports that predict the 21st Century as the century for women. We see rising involvement of women in boardrooms and executive positions globally.

?In March 2012, Business Insider revealed that women hold 21% of senior management positions globally. This study shows that women are in an advantageous position to strengthen ethics in business,? she said.

Rosmah said that in Malaysia, the government was also encouraging companies to increase the number of women on their governing boards to at least 30% by 2015 and, currently, on-the-job training programmes ? most of it focused on strengthening ethics in business ? were being held to prepare these women for board positions.

Rosmah said business ethics was important to the company, the consumer as well as the employees and stakeholders, and for the healthy growth of an economy.

Those who did not follow ethical rules might have short-term success, but would fail in the market in the long run, she added.

Rosmah said Qatari and Malaysian businesswomen associations could develop a common platform for debates and deliberations on business ethics for insights, learning and sharing experiences.

?We could organise joint programmes regularly that mutually serve both the Gulf and ASEAN. These could include educational and business programmes as well as exchange of talents that will strengthen business ethics in both regions,? she said.

Meanwhile, in a separate event, Rosmah received the ?Honour for Charitable Commitment and Philanthropy? award in appreciation of her dedication and commitment to charity work.

The award was presented by the Vice-Chairwoman of the Qatari Businesswomen Association, Aisha Al-Fardan.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Led Zeppelin will not be reuniting any time soon.

That message came through loud and clear Tuesday with sarcasm, stoic silence, and even the occasional barb at reporters that dared to ask. Just the mere mention of the topic set lead singer Robert Plant off at their news conference for the bands upcoming concert film, "Celebration Day."

But at the film's premiere later in the evening, guitarist Jimmy Page set the record straight, sort of, about a potential reunion.

"I think it's disappointing for people when the answer is no," Page said. But he later added: "That's what it is now."

"Celebration Day" covers their 2007 reunion concert at London's 02 Arena. Original members Plant, Page, and John Paul Jones, as well as Jason Bonham, the son of the late John Bonham, played the one-time tribute concert to honor Atlantic records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

"Once the idea was proposed, 'Would we do the concert?' It had to be Jason," Page said.

Since the death of Bonham in 1980, the band has only played a handful of gigs, with the 2007 tribute concert being the last time. The group enlisted the younger Bonham, a successful drummer in his own right, to play with the band.

On the red carpet, Bonham said he understands why the fans want something more from the band, but feels there's good reason to put it to rest.

"I think it's probably frustrating to the public when they see how good it is, and they go, 'why won't you do anymore?' They don't get it," Bonham said. "But you know what, there's a time, and for me it's when John Bonham was in Led Zeppelin."

Jones, the band's bassist, eloquently said all the band's energy went into that performance.

"We focused on the show and that was it. Fortunately it was on film," Jones said.

Page was conscious of Led Zeppelin's uninspired performance at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert in 1988. So the band rehearsed for about six weeks prior to the London show.

"You have to understand, any other group would be a doing a warm-up gig, and then they would have like two or three concerts in a row. We could have done more than one, with the demand, but we only had one shot and we had to be super-duper confident on it, and it went well," Page said.

During a news conference earlier in the day, the band first became uncomfortable with a question about "anticipating something bigger for the band."

"We've been thinking about all sorts of things, and then we can't remember what we were thinking about," singer Plant said testily. He then referred to this reporter by the pejorative term "schmuck."

As the questions mounted about anything to do with their future, the band responded with silence.

At one point, Page mentioned that the reunion concert was five years ago and that if there was a chance they were reuniting, people would have heard.

"Seems pretty unlikely, doesn't it?" Page said.

"Celebration Day" will be released worldwide on Oct. 17 on 1500 screens before its release on DVD Nov. 19.

St. Petersburg's 'gay propaganda' law has LGBT Russians wary

Eight burly guards in black suits ushered guests into an anonymous building on the bank of the Neva River in St. Petersburg, as activists, artists, and diplomats gathered last month for the opening of the city's Queer Fest ? the first time the annual event has been held under the shadow of a new law against "gay propaganda" aimed at minors.

But while the law has largely been used as a club against the city's gay community, some say that it has not done much ? and may even have galvanized the community to stand up for their rights.

The law, signed into effect by St. Petersburg's governor this spring, outlaws "public action aimed at propagandizing sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism, and transgenderism among minors." Individuals found guilty face up to a 5,000-ruble fine, about $160. Government officials and businesses face much higher maximum fines of 50,000 rubles ($1,600) and 500,000 rubles ($16,000) respectively.

According to Agence France-Presse, more than 70 people have been arrested for violating the law, though only one person, high-profile LGBT activist Nikolay Alekseyev, has been convicted. He has admitted to pushing boundaries in order to draw attention to and challenge the law.

Similar laws already existed in a handful of cities. Some proponents in the State Duma have said a national law would be desirable.

Almost three-quarters of Russians surveyed said homosexuals were immoral or suffered psychological problems, according to a survey by the research institute Levada in 2010. Still, almost half of respondents believed homosexuals had the right to equality with heterosexual citizens.

Critics say authorities apply the law arbitrarily, often as a handy pretext to clear the streets of demonstrators. Polina Savchenko, from the organization Coming Out St. Petersburg, says. "The police arrest people citing the new law, but once you're in custody they drop those charges for others, such as disorderly conduct."

A CHILLY ENVIRONMENT

The law's wording is unclear regarding what it actually bars, leaving the city's LGBT community to walk on eggshells. The Queer Fest event itself, for example, ? where portraits of lesbians lined the hall's grand staircase and community advocates spoke freely ? was limited to an 18-plus crowd by organizers for fear that it might be classified as propaganda.

Several attendees also noted that they were unsure what the law actually entailed ? though they were afraid of persecution even before it was introduced.

"I don't show my love for my boyfriend openly," said Alexander Petrov, a volunteer at the event, adding, "but I wouldn't have done that before either." Still, later Mr. Petrov later sought out a photojournalist and asked not to have his picture published in Russia.

Attendee Janet Yurieva, sporting a shaved head and a slight figure, made a similar point. "Because I don't look like a normal girl, I'm afraid to go out on the street," she said. "I don't dare to kiss my girlfriend outside. Maybe somewhere no one can see us."

She said she had long experienced homophobia, even at home. "I told my mom I was lesbian a few months ago. She started crying and blamed everything on my dad for leaving us when I was young."

But Ms. Savchenko, who flitted in and out of the grand exhibition hall, greeting friends and colleagues and moving proceedings along, said she saw an upside to the law. "I actually believe the law has done more good than bad,? she said. ?Why? Because it has mobilized the LGBT community in our city. Before, no one would fight for their rights. People were OK with keeping their sexual orientation a secret. But now they're angry and ready to defend themselves."

FOREIGN CRITICISM

Abroad, the law has drawn heavy criticism. Indeed, one of the features of the event was a video appearance by Ian McKellan, the renowned British actor best known as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings. Wearing a simple T-shirt that said "Some people are gay. Get over it," Mr. McKellen told the suit-clad diplomats and hipster-styled party-goers in attendance that the fight for LGBT rights was a global one and wished St. Petersburg good luck to roaring cheers from the crowd.

Also at the festival opening, British Consul General to St. Petersburg Gareth Ward addressed the audience of about 100 invitees. He drew attention to the fact that gay rights had been secured step by step in his home country. British Foreign Office staff could not be openly gay until 1991, he noted.

"We've all had prejudices in our societies, but it can change," Mr. Ward said after his speech. "As a member nation of the Council of Europe, Russia does have to listen to its neighbors," he added.

Ward had several colleagues in attendance, from Germany and France, among others ? notably all from western European nations. "We voiced our concern last fall even before the law was formerly introduced," said Sweden's consul general to St. Petersburg, Jan Nyberg. "So the authorities ought to know what we think."

It?s been super busy here, and I didn?t want to forget to get a big congratulations up to Lois Trott and her husband on their 47th wedding anniversary.

Lois and Barbara Trott were the two famous Philadelphia American Bandstand twins who spent their American Bandstand dancing days ? day in and day out ? confusing the hell out of Dick Clark. Ha!

But there is no confusion about the longtime friendships and love relationships they nourished in their families and extended family of fans and friends.

Though as sweeping a generalization as it may appear, perhaps twins ? due to their special closeness ? learn more about how to sustain relationships better than others.

But so many of the American Bandstand Regulars maintained longtime healthy and supportive relationships over a half a century: Justine Carrelli and Bob Clayton; Joyce Shafer, Marlyn Brown and Diane Iaquinto; Eddie Kelly and Carmen and Ivette Jimenez; Frankie Levins and Larry Brumbach; Barbara Marcen, Bobbi Young, Little Ro; Rosalie Beltrante and Terri Schreffler; Arlene Sullivan and Kenny Rossi;?. Frank Brancaccio and too many to mention. And before they passed, Norman Kerr and Myrna Horowitz with Joyce Shafer, Richie Cartledge and Bobby Baritz, Betty Romantini with Joe Fusco, Billy Cook and Pat Molittieri and so on and so forth.

Being inside the community and being invited into their personal lives, has been a gift I will always cherish.

And the extension of that group are all the fans and friends of Bandstand?s Best where we have the largest gathering of American Bandstand Regulars and fans in the Cyber-World today and in just more than a tenth of a decade; however, my friendships with the Bandstand community had been forming for many years prior.

Bandstand?s Best is the best medicine there is for curing the Bandstand blues. There is not a bad apple among the Bandstand bunch here in the magical kingdom. It fell off the Bandstand tree way back when.

On a philosophical note. Jealousy and envy are killers when it comes to communication and friendship; and competition is about the game and not about the winning; and egos are fine when they enhance personal fortitude and confidence, but not when they become for the greater part self-serving.

I think the above quotes were mine ? though they may have been Ren? Descartes, Jean-Paul Sartre, or Francois Rabelais?. It was one of us.
