While it does seem?to be spreading like a virus, ?Up-Talk? does not spell the end of civilization.

No, the rapid spread of this debilitating voice pathology is not as alarming as, say, the spread of the Rage virus in the film 28 Days Later . . .

But . . .

Up-Talk?does?show an incredible degradation of the language and of clear ideas, confidently expressed.

And as with most obstacles, there is an opportunity buried inside this one.? This infestation of Up-Talk offers you an valuable opportunity, but for it to work, you must keep it to yourself so that the gulf and the contrast between you and them is as great as can be.

If you can overcome your own tendency toward Up-Talk, which is a hoi-polloi kind of thing, and can train yourself to speak with a forthright confidence, you will have lifted yourself above the?horde of?up-talking babblers that seems to increase daily.

The Up-Talk Pathology

Up-talk is the maddening rise of inflection at the end of declarative sentences that transforms simple statements into an endless stream of questioning uncertainty.? As if the speaker is contantly asking for validation.

Yes, maddening . . .?and it infests everyone exposed to this voice with doubt, unease, and irritation.? It screams amateur when used in formal presentations.? It cries out:? ?I don?t know what I?m talking about here.? I just memorized a series of sentences and I?m spitting them out now in this stupid presentation.? I?m not invested in this exercise at all.?

Poet and social commentator Taylor Mali has this to say about this voice pathology . . .

?

?

Up-Talk?is an unfortunate habit of inflecting the voice upward at the end of every sentence, as if a question is being asked.? It radiates weakness and uncertainty and doubt.? It conveys the mood of unfinished business, as if something more is yet to come.? Sentence after sentence in succession is spoken as if a series of questions.

You create a tense atmosphere with Up-Talking that is almost demonic in its effect.? This tic infests your audience with an unidentifiable uneasiness.? At its worst, your audience wants to cover ears and cry ?make it stop!??? . . . but they aren?t quite sure at what they should vent their fury.

Up-Talk? =? ?I don?t know what I?m talking about?

In certain places abroad, this tic is known as the Australian Questioning Intonation, popular among young Australians.? The Brits are less generous in their assessment of this barbarism, calling it the ?moronic interrogative,? a term coined by comedian Rory McGrath.

In United States popular culture, listen for it in any popular youth-oriented television show.? Reality television females, as a breed, seem unable to express themselves in any other way.? Their lives appear as one big query.

But you can fix this.

In fact, you can gain an especially powerful competitive advantage simply by eliminating this pathology.? If you speak with straightforward declarative sentences, with confidence and conviction, your personal presence gains power, and this power increases the more it is contrasted with the hosts of questioning babblers around you who seem unsure of anything.

For many young speakers, Up-Talk is the only roadblock standing between them and a major step up in presentation power.

And recognizing that you have this awful habit is halfway to correcting it.

Evaluate your own speech to identify the up-tic.

Then come to grips with it, and, you know . . .

Eliminate it.

Totally.

(AP) ? The Mexican government is battling an egg shortage and hoarding that have caused prices to spike in a country with the highest per-capita egg consumption on Earth.

A summer epidemic of bird flu in the heart of Mexico's egg industry has doubled the cost of a kilo (2.2 pounds), or about 13 eggs, to more than 40 pesos ($3), a major blow to working- and middle-class consumers in a country that consumes more than 350 eggs per person each year. That's 100 more eggs per person than in the United States.

Egg prices have dominated the headlines here for a week, spurring Mexico City's mayor to ship tons of cheap eggs to poor neighborhoods and the federal government to announce emergency programs to get fresh chickens to farms hit by bird flu and to restock supermarket shelves with eggs imported from the U.S. and Central America.

The national dismay over egg prices has revealed the unappreciated importance of a cheap, easy source of protein that's nearly as important to Mexican kitchens as tortillas, rice and beans. Added boiled to stewed chicken, raw to a fruit-juice hangover cure and in every other conceivable form to hundreds of other foods, the once-ubiquitous egg has disappeared from many street-side food stands and middle-class kitchens in recent days.

"Eggs, as you know, are one of Mexicans' most important foods and make up a core part of their diet, especially in the poorest regions of the country," President Felipe Calderon said Friday as he announced about $227 million in emergency financing and commercial measures to restore production and replace about 11 million chickens slaughtered after the June outbreak of bird flu.

Calderon said he was sending inspectors to stop speculation that he blamed for high egg prices, which have almost single-handedly driven up the national rate of inflation.

He said that the government had already begun large-scale importation of eggs and that about 3 million hens were being sent to farms hit by the flu outbreak.

The Mexico City government has sent a refrigerated trailer-truck of eggs into working-class neighborhoods over the last three days, selling kilo packets for less than half the current market price. Several thousand people lined up for about two hours Friday morning to buy eggs from the truck in southeastern Mexico City's Iztacalco neighborhood.

Isidro Vasquez Gonzalez, an unemployed 43-year-old cook, waited with his niece and nephew to buy three kilos of eggs that they said they would eat almost immediately in a lunch of meatballs with chopped eggs.

"You can make eggs with anything ? scrambled eggs, with pork rinds, eggs with beans, green chiles, poached eggs, green beans with eggs, eggs with tomato sauce, " Vazquez said, with a wistful look in his eyes. "People here eat a lot of eggs. They were the cheapest, but now they're the most expensive. They're more expensive than meat."

The crisis began with the June detection of bird flu in the western state of Michoacan, which produces roughly half of Mexico's eggs. Some 11 million birds were killed to prevent the spread of the disease, sharply cutting into the national supply of more than 2 million tons of eggs a year.

Government officials blame speculators in the wholesale egg business for driving up prices beyond the hike resulting from bird flu.

After existing stocks of eggs ran out, prices rose sharply in August.

"Eggs are what we eat the most these days," said Gertrudis Rodriguez, 68. But with the higher prices, she said, "if we eat beans, we don't eat eggs, or if we eat eggs, we don't eat beans with them."

Mexico City's public Food Supply Center, which provides government-subsidized fresh food to low-income residents, dropped other ingredients from its truck this week in favor of eggs, and will distribute 18 tons by the time its current stocks run out Monday, director-general Raymundo Collins said.

Calderon said more than 150 tons of eggs had already crossed the border from the U.S. and 100 trailers carrying 500 more tons would arrive in the country over the weekend.

"The federal government will keep using every tool in its power to keep family's quality of life from being eroded by unfair increases in the price of eggs," the president said.

PFT: Urlacher's Week 1 status in doubt

Jerry JonesAP

Another day, another NFL owner claiming that locking out the officials isn?t making a difference on the field.

This time it?s Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who said on 103.5 The Fan that he?s not concerned about the lockout.

?No I?m not,? Jones said. ?As long as it?s the same for both sides ? and it will be ? we?ll be all right. And they?re going to get better as they move along.?

Jones, who was fined $25,000 in 2008 for criticizing referee Ed Hochuli and fined $100,000 in 2009 for discussing issues relating to the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the players, apparently doesn?t have any problem talking about the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the officials. Jones also said he doesn?t agree with those who believe NFL refereeing needs to be a full-time job, which seems to put him at odds with some of the owners, who have suggested that a new deal with the NFL Referees? Association would include at least some of the refs agreeing to give up their other jobs and devote all of their time to officiating.

?I think we get better people by having officials that don?t make it full time,? Jones said. ?When you only are officiating 16 games a year, plus the playoff games, it doesn?t warrant full-time officials.?

Ultimately, Jones said, he hasn?t noticed any difference with replacements, and he said he thinks that if there are mistakes on the field, instant replay should be able to get it right.

?I haven?t, really, because I can take any game at this juncture in any year and come up with criticism of the officiating,? Jones said. ?It?s subjective in so many areas, and we?ve got in place a pretty good backup system now with our replays, and when it?s replayed. If anything, I?ve seen in a couple of our games the replay procedure needs improvement. . . . That has, in my mind, nothing to do with these replacement officials.?

Jones sounds like he?s convinced that the officials? lockout could go on indefinitely without affecting the NFL. Something tells me he?ll change his mind if a bad call from a replacement official costs the Cowboys a game.

Silver, Wine, Art and Gold (SWAG) Protect From Inflation & Currency ...

Silver, wine, art and gold ? or SWAG ? may be the solution for investors looking to protect their wealth in the coming years according to perceptive Reuters Columnist, James Saft. In an interesting article and an interesting video for Reuters, Saft coins the term ?Investing 201? which means having SWAG in your portfolio in order to protect investors from ?a grim decade of money printing and financial repression.? SWAG, as in silver, wine, art and gold, are real assets that might just outperform if official policy causes the money supply to surge according to Saft. This is the idea of Joe Roseman, who says SWAG will do very well over what could be a very troubled next decade. ?These assets effectively act as a money supply index tracker,? said Roseman, who for 16 years was a money manager and economist at Moore Capital, run by the legendary Louis Bacon. ?If the authorities are going to bail themselves out, money supply will expand. Every single time governments have been here, this is exactly what they have done.?

From Goldcore:

Today?s AM fix was USD 1,615.25, EUR 1,306.84, and GBP 1,028.04 per ounce.
Friday?s AM fix was USD 1,616.50, EUR 1,306.05 and GBP 1,028.57 per ounce.

Silver is trading at $28.13/oz, ?22.96/oz and ?18.00/oz. Platinum is trading at $1,476.75/oz, palladium at $599.20/oz and rhodium at $1,025/oz.

Gold edged up $1.90 or 0.12% in New York on Friday and closed at $1,615.90/oz. Silver surged to $28.34 in early trading then fell off and closed with a loss 0.43%.

For the week, gold was 0.3% lower and silver was 0.14% lower.

?

Platinum hit its highest price is 6 weeks Monday on worries that supply will shrink after the mining massacre in South Africa, at the world?s top platinum producer, last week.

At a mine run by Lonmin, the world?s number 3 producer, 34 people were shot by police over the last week as industrial unrest was brutally quashed. Striking workers may be sacked if they do not return to work today. There are concerns that the volatile political situation in South Africa could worsen and unrest spread to the gold mining sector (see commentary).

Some gold investors are still waiting on clear signals from central banks before re-entering the market. ?Prudent investors and those with a more long term time horizon continue to buy or keep an allocation to gold within a portfolio.

Although US gold futures and options fell for a second week, the SPDR Gold Trust, the world?s largest gold backed ETF, climbed 0.9% as of August 17th its highest since July 9th.

Cross Currency Table ? (Bloomberg)

Gold Spot $/oz ? (Bloomberg)

Roseman, who now manages his own money, has published a book titled ?Silver, Wine, Art and Gold: Alternative Assets for the Coming Decade?.

His argument, in short, is that a combination of excessive debt, aging populations, resource scarcity and financial repression will bring on extremely poor performance in equities and bonds.

Equities will suffer, and bonds, the traditional safe haven, will hugely underperform as policymakers engineer inflation and seek to trap assets as sources of government funding.

Rather than death and taxes, then, investors will come to fear money printing and financial repression, which will be used to help inflate away excessive debts and corral funds for hard-hit governments.

Under this scenario, what is sure to go up is the money supply, as central banks print and print, either to fund their governments or to ease the real impact of high debt by stoking inflation.

Roseman?s argument is that SWAG assets can act almost like alternative currencies, and, unlike fiat currencies, cannot have their supply increased at the press of a button.

You can?t magic up more gold or 10 new Picassos. They also, by definition, carry no debt, making their risk profile hugely different from most other assets, implying a lack of correlation and added protection.

In addition, SWAG are not denominated in any particular currency, meaning you are not hostage to a particular monetary or fiscal policy, or even to natural disasters or wars. It?s worth noting that the range of SWAG-like assets extends beyond the big four, to include in varying degrees things like palladium and stamps.

SILVER
A hard currency instrument like gold, but with more industrial uses. Up almost 500% over a decade. Useful as a diversifier from gold. Roseman is optimistic about industrial demand. That said, this makes it a less pure play on the theme of a rising money supply and inflation.

WINE
The most investable fine wines have done well over the past decade and studies indicate they have low correlation with traditional assets. Finite supply of the great investment wines, portability and relatively low storage costs are an advantage. There also has been huge growth of demand from prestige-oriented drinkers in China and other emerging markets.

However, this is a double edged sword: while Chateau Lafite, the wine to serve to impress your regional party boss in China, has surged in price, so has fraud. By some estimates the amount of Lafite drunk in China last year exceeded total yearly production by almost 10 times. Wine investing requires storage charges, and wine funds are often quite expensive. Due diligence and caution are key in selecting advisers and storage places, as instances of fraud and overcharging are far from unknown.

ART
The oddest of the group, and the one of which Roseman seems most fond. What is art? Hard to say, but whatever it is, it seems to go up satisfyingly in price, with sections of the market sky-rocketing even during the tough times in recent years.

While I have concerns that this is a market highly dependent on the 1pc, and thus vulnerable to falls if their share of income falls, Roseman believes that the growth of the very wealthy in emerging markets will drive future price growth.

There are collective investment vehicles specialising in art, but once again charges will tend to be high and due diligence is incredibly important. Needless to say, fraud is a real risk.

GOLD
This is the classic hedge against having one?s pocket picked by money printing and inflation. Supply is limited and new sources take time to come on line. Gold has performed fantastically in the past decade ? up more than 400pc ? and has become far more mainstream, attracting institutional investors. Carrying costs can be low, and, thankfully, no need to pay an investment manager.

Roseman argues that for investors with perhaps $5m (?4m) to $10m in investable assets, a weighting of 20pc in SWAG would be appropriate. He urges caution and due diligence.

I have a lot of sympathy with the underlying concerns driving a SWAG allocation, but I do worry about costs, fraud and the potential that the same events that are driving money printing and financial repression could have an impact on wine and art values.

Roseman, argues, convincingly, that actually, compared with many financial assets, SWAG tends to be simple and robust.

In some ways the decision boils down to the classic dilemma facing investors considering paying high fees ? the promise of truly uncorrelated and defensive assets against the sure thing of higher costs to get a shot at the good outcome.

If Roseman is right, my concerns about costs will look small-minded. We agree about due diligence: if huge amounts of cash flow into art and wine, you can bet fraud will rise.

A bit of prudence can go a long way, both in terms of protecting investors through due diligence and in the genuine hedge value of SWAG assets during an all-too-believable scenario of financial repression and rampant money printing.

Saft?s article, Adding SWAG To Your Portfolio can be read here.
