    -Right click in the instrument area.
    -Select "Save All Samples as..."
    You will get a dialog to define your first location, once set, it won't ask you any more (unless you click the browse button).
    -Either pick wav or flac and then click save.

    If an instrument has samples, it will save them into a folder named after the instrument.

    Whoops, first edit already required...
    The renaming schedule was broken if the same sample filename already existed...

    Decided to also use the idle notifier. (Renoise was quite often nagging the script turn unresponsive)
    The status bar now shows some form of progress while exporting.

    Pentagon lifts ban on women in combat

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Thursday lifted a longtime ban on women serving in front-line combat positions, taking a historic step toward gender equality in the U.S. military after 11 years of war in which women were increasingly present on the battlefield.

    Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, signed an order at a Pentagon news conference rescinding the rule that prevented women from serving in direct combat jobs.

    "They serve, they're wounded, and they die right next to each other. The time has come to recognize that reality," Panetta said, noting that 152 women in uniform had been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    "Over more than a decade of war, they have demonstrated courage and skill and patriotism," he said.

    The move topples another social barrier in the U.S. armed forces, two years after the Pentagon scrapped its "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military.

    The decision to open up the additional jobs to women came as Panetta prepares to leave the Pentagon after about 18 months in office. Senate confirmation hearings for former Senator Chuck Hagel, President Barack Obama's nominee to succeed Panetta, are scheduled for next week.

    Obama expressed strong support for the new policy, as did civilian and military leaders from the different services.

    "Today every American can be proud that our military will grow even stronger with our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters playing a greater role in protecting this country we love," Obama said, calling the decision a "historic step."

    Major Mary Hegar, a helicopter pilot with the California Air National Guard who joined an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit to open combat jobs to women, said the decision was "a huge leap forward." But with each of the services deciding how to implement the changes, "there are going to be roadblocks in the future," she said.

    Some officials and organizations voiced caution. Senator Jim Inhofe, incoming top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he was "concerned about the potential impacts" of the new policy and suspected in some cases Congress might have to intervene to "stop any changes we believe to be detrimental to our fighting forces and their capabilities."

    The decision to lift the ban came with important caveats, and sweeping change will not happen overnight for women, nearly 300,000 of whom have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001.

    The move could open some 237,000 positions to women and expand opportunities for career advancement. But acceptance into the newly opened jobs is not assured and will be based on gender-neutral performance standards.

    "Let me be clear. We are not talking about reducing the qualifications for the job," Panetta said. "If they can meet the qualifications for the job, then they should have the right to serve regardless of creed or color or gender or sexual orientation."

    "There are no guarantees of success," he added. "Not everyone is going to be able to be a combat soldier. But everyone is entitled to a chance."

    'OPEN EVERYTHING'

    A senior defense official said Panetta's goal "is to open everything" to women. Service chiefs will have to ask for exceptions if they want to keep some positions closed, and any exception would have to be approved by the defense secretary.

    Most service jobs are already open to women. The Army, for example, has 497 occupational specialties and all but 20, about 96 percent, are currently open to women, Army officials said.

    The Army specialties currently closed to women represent a large number of jobs - about 120,000 - so only about 75 percent of Army jobs are open to women, they said.

    The Pentagon last year opened 14,000 jobs to women by enabling them to take positions as medics, intelligence officers and military police at the battalion level, which previously was considered too close to combat. But they continued to be barred from infantry, armored and special operations units whose main function was to engage in front-line combat.

    Based on the experience of opening up new positions to women over the past year, the officials said they did not expect a large number of women would seek front-line combat jobs.

    "But there are women that want to do this, and I think they should have the chance," said General Robert Cone, the head of Army training and doctrine.

    Panetta made the decision to lift the ban after the Joint Chiefs of Staff concluded it was time to integrate women "to the maximum extent possible," according to a statement.

    Gender-neutral performance standards will be developed for all the new jobs opening to women, officials said. But whether that means the physical requirements become more or less rigorous remains to be seen, they added, cautioning that they would depend on the actual demands of the position.

    An example of a physically demanding job that may be out of reach of women without significant upper body strength could be in front-line tanks, where soldiers need to lift and load heavy ammunition in confined spaces using mainly their arms.

    A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the new policy would take effect gradually. The service chiefs have until May 15 to offer plans to implement the new policy by January 1, 2016.

    "The secretary understands with a change of this magnitude it does take some time," the official said.

    For many women service members, the move is belated acknowledgement of the realities of the past decade of war, in which there were often no clearly defined front lines. Of those who served, 152 have been killed, including 84 in hostile action, and nearly 1,000 have been wounded.

    The 36-year-old Hegar, who was awarded the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross for action in Afghanistan, said she viewed the debate over women in combat as being out of sync with reality. The issue is job equality, she said.

    "Women are in combat. Thousands of women are in combat," Hegar said. "It's about giving them the correct job title. (If)you have a woman shoulder to shoulder with someone, doing the same exact job, and her job title is different because legally she can't be engaging in ground combat, who do you think is going to get promoted faster?"

    Women serve in combat roles for the armed forces of a few developed nations, including Canada and Israel, but officials say demand from women for such jobs in NATO nations is very low. In 2010, Britain decided after a review that it would not change rules excluding women from infantry or combat teams.

    The United States is drawing down its some 66,000 remaining forces from Afghanistan through the end of 2014, when only a small residual force is expected to remain. It is possible that some women may see themselves in new combat roles before that withdrawal is complete.

    "I don't think we can exclude that possibility," one senior defense official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

    HAVANA (AP) ? A half-century later, Jose Rafa Malem remembers the balmy breezes blowing through the bar's arching porticos, the grain of the tall wood stools, the whiff of Pedro Domecq brandy on his father's breath.

    And how could he forget the tangy ground-beef-and-tomato-sauce sandwiches synonymous with what was then one of Havana's hippest hangouts, playfully dubbed Sloppy Joe's? "I ate so many, I got tired of them," said Rafa, a 59-year-old Havana native who grew up to become a bartender.

    Soon, Rafa will be able to relive those boyhood memories as the original Sloppy Joe's reopens in Havana's historic quarter, giving residents and tourists from all over the chance to belly up to the same bar that served thirsty celebrities such as Rock Hudson, Babe Ruth and Ernest Hemingway.

    It's part of an ambitious revitalization project by the Havana City Historian's Office, which since the 1990s has transformed block after block of crumbling ruins into rehabilitated buildings along vibrant cobblestone streets.

    The effort has helped finance Cuba's socialist present by drawing tourists fascinated by its pre-socialist past, from colonial palaces of the 18th century to celebrity hangouts of the 1950s.

    "For the people of this city, I think it's very interesting and very important to rescue a place that has so much history and is so recognized around the world," said Ernesto Iznaga, manager of the born-again Joe's, which will be run by state-owned tourism concern Habaguanex. "To restore it to how it was before."

    Sloppy Joe's was founded in 1918 by a Galician immigrant named Jose Abeal Otero who purchased a grocery store in Old Havana after years of tending bar in New Orleans and Miami. Legend has it the sobriquet comes from the place's grubbiness and Abeal's American nickname, Joe.

    Rafa's father was a close friend of longtime bartender Fabio Delgado and took his boy there on Sunday afternoons beginning in the late '50s. During the day, Rafa said, Joe's was a mellow family joint where kids slurped ice cream and Coca-Cola while mom and dad chatted over more potent spirits.

    Employees made sandwiches to order behind the black mahogany bar, polished to a high shine and purportedly once the longest in Latin America at about 59 feet (18 meters).

    After dark, the place filled up with Americans on vacation.

    Abeal's affable personality and familiarity with English from his years in the States helped make Joe's a favorite among tipsy Yanks as far back as the Prohibition era of 1920-1933, along with the nearby El Floridita bar, the reputed birthplace of the daiquiri cocktail, and La Bodeguita del Medio, home of the minty, rum-infused mojito.

    As much as any other place in Havana, Joe's exemplified the island's lure as a playground for Americans.

    "No Havana resident ever went to Sloppy Joe's," novelist Graham Greene wrote in his 1958 spy-farce "Our Man in Havana," ''because it was the rendezvous of tourists."

    It was a stylish clientele compared with the flip-flop and tank-top tourists who swarm Cuba and other Caribbean islands today. One illustrated color postcard from the era shows gentlemen in fedoras and pinstripes laughing on barstools alongside white-gloved ladies. Many were wealthy, famous and looking for a good time.

    Frank Sinatra. Ava Gardner. Nat King Cole. The list of patrons reads like a Who's Who from Hollywood's Golden Age. Rafa said his own brushes with celebrity included Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams and Cuban crooner Benny More. Swashbuckling actor Errol Flynn, who reportedly got in a fistfight at the bar with an overly admiring fan, was enough of a regular that Joe's named a cocktail for him.

    Ownership later passed to another "Joe," Jose Garcia.

    But last call came in 1965 as Fidel Castro's communist government was nationalizing nearly all private businesses, and Joe's has been shuttered for nearly five decades.

    When restoration work began in 2010, laborers discovered that the wood floors, rotten from humidity and years of neglect, had collapsed into the basement. The wooden bar, meanwhile, had splintered into three pieces.

    "It was in ruins," Iznaga said.

    He and his crew have spent two years bringing the watering hole back to life. To keep Joe's as faithful to the original as possible, they've examined historic photos and talked to old-timers like Rafa who remember the way it was.

    Messy ground-beef sandwiches will be on the new menu, naturally. Iznaga said they apparently originated as an Abeal family recipe, though others have also claimed they invented them.

    Also on the menu will be the Errol Flynn, an icy vodka and tomato-juice concoction garnished with a celery spear. Among the few changes is that the new bar will be air-conditioned for the comfort of sweaty patrons.

    At the intersection of Animas and Zulueta streets on a recent morning, dozens of workers buzzed about painting and finishing the bar's wood surfaces. A Sloppy Joe's sign hung from the building's corner, wrapped in plastic and ready to be unveiled for opening day.

    Construction setbacks have delayed the re-opening from Iznaga's original target around New Year's, and the first fingers of Havana Club rum will likely flow sometime in February.

    Across the Florida Straits, where rum-runner and speakeasy operator Joe Russell named his own bar Sloppy Joe's in the 1930s at the suggestion of his friend Ernest Hemingway, operators are delighted that the original is being reborn.

    "It's exciting because obviously our history is tied into their history," said Donna Edwards, brand manager at the Key West Joe's, which recently celebrated 75 years at its current location. "Hemingway and Russell, they would frequent Sloppy Joe's when they were in Havana. It's a piece of history, and our history is now coming to life again."

    Gene mutation immortalizes malignant melanoma

    Jan. 25, 2013 ? Scientists from the German Cancer Research Center and from University Duisburg-Essen have discovered a previously unknown genetic cause of malignant melanoma: a gene mutation that leads to overactive telomerase, the so-called 'immortality enzyme'. The mutated gene region found in familial melanoma is also altered in up to 74 percent of non-inherited cases of melanoma -- here as a consequence of sun exposure. Substances inhibiting telomerase may be a novel therapeutic approach for treating malignant melanoma. The researchers have published their findings in Science.

    About ten percent of all cases of malignant melanoma are familial cases. The genome of affected families tells scientists a lot about how the disease develops. Prof. Dr. Rajiv Kumar of the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) together with Prof. Dr. Dirk Schadendorf from Essen University Hospital studied a family where 14 family members were affected by malignant melanoma.

    The scientists analyzed the genomes of family members and found an identical mutation in the gene for telomerase, an enzyme often called 'immortality enzyme', in all persons studied. Telomerase protects the ends of chromosomes from being lost in the process of cell division and, thus, prevents that the cell ages and dies. The inherited gene mutation leads to the formation of a binding site for protein factors in the controlling region of the telomerase gene, causing it to become overactive. As a result, mutated cells overproduce telomerase and hence become virtually immortal.

    This spectacular finding of the family analysis prompted the scientists to also look for mutated telomerase genes in non-inherited (sporadic) melanoma, which is much more common than the familial variant. In most of the tissue samples of melanomas of all stages they found alterations in the telomerase gene switch, which the researchers clearly identified as typical consequences of sun exposure. Even though these mutations were not identical to those found in the melanoma family, they had the same effect: overactive telomerase.

    "We don't believe that the telomerase gene in melanoma is mutated by pure chance, but that it is a so-called driver mutation that drives carcinogenesis," says Rajiv Kumar. This is also confirmed by the surprising incidence of this alteration: The telomerase gene is the most frequently mutated gene in melanoma. "This is something we hadn't expected, because malignant melanoma has been genetically analyzed thoroughly. But this mutation always seems to have been overlooked," says Kumar.

    Rajiv Kumar, Dirk Schadendorf and their teams are hoping that the alterations in the telomerase gene may be a starting point for developing novel treatment methods for malignant melanoma. A very recent development targeting a specific alteration in the B-RAF gene, which characterizes about half of all melanomas, has shown that this is possible. The mutation gave rise to the development of a targeted drug that can arrest cancer growth. "Substances inhibiting telomerase have already been developed and some of them have even been tested in phase III clinical trials," said Rajiv Kumar. Inhibition of the immortality enzyme might also be able to arrest growth in melanoma.

    ?We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.?

    History tells us that while these truths may be self-evident, they have never been self-executing; that while freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by His people here on Earth.

    Indeed, the words of Jefferson and Obama above reflect what King, Kennedy, Ghandi and others have long advocated: Be the change you want to see in the world. Here is a true story of what that might look like.

    An infant abandoned by family begins his second year of life in Foster Care in New York. Bouncing around from home to home?including the one his biological mother briefly maintains?his path is uncertain, his future bleak, and he eventually winds up in a group home in Queens, surrounded primarily by other teens?all poor; most black and brown?all precious.

    One day a southern?man comes to the city from upstate New York. He is charged with administering the Equal Opportunity Program grant for the State University of New York at Potsdam. The boy from Queens is accepted. He gets a ticket out of the group home to college. The destination of many of his peers, however, is dead-end jobs, prison, or the streets.

    The boy/adolescent in this story is clear to me, because it was me, a generation ago. The man who gave me that ticket out will be 85 years old this spring. Dr. Brown?s birthday present was a ticket, too?to the inauguration. It came from the boy he helped save through education some 30 years earlier.

    Two days ago Dr. Brown heard? how ?We the people? will be the ones who decide our futures. He also must have deeply understood that ?preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action,? for this black man from Alabama who suffered the worst racism imaginable wore no shaded glasses when he recruited this impoverished white boy from New York to go to college. Dr. Brown has put a new spin on the color and class myths exemplified by Western movie stars who traverse the globe to save little hungry African children. In fact, we all need a hand at times, regardless of its color?and regardless of the color of our own.

    Institutionally, this ?collective action? our President calls for has a natural home in our schools, as they are both the only entity that touches every child in this country, and the foundation for all that these children will create in our society. It is even more poignant, then, that Dr. Brown is a lifelong educator and facilitator of education for others. And it is powerful to see the ripple effect that he and others in this arena have every day on our children, our nation, and our world. People who have dedicated their lives in this way truly hold the ?ticket out? for so many children. And sometimes, those whose lives they impact are able to find them again later and say: ?Thank you. You made all the difference in my life.?

    (AP) ? Like vinyl records and skinny ties, good things eventually come back around. At NASA, that means looking to the Apollo program for ideas on how to develop the next generation of rockets for future missions to the moon and beyond.

    Young engineers who weren't even born when the last Saturn V rocket took off for the moon are testing a vintage engine from the program.

    The engine, known to NASA engineers as No. F-6049, was supposed to help propel Apollo 11 into orbit in 1969, when NASA sent Neil Armstrong and two other astronauts to the moon for the first time. The flight went off without a hitch, but no thanks to the engine ? it was grounded because of a glitch during a test in Mississippi and later sent to the Smithsonian Institution, where it sat for years.

    Now engineers are learning to work with technical systems and propellants not used since before the start of the space shuttle program, which first launched in 1981.

    Nick Case, 27, and other engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center on Thursday completed a series of 11 test-firings of the F-6049's gas generator, a jet-like rocket which produces 30,000 pounds of thrust and was used as a starter for the engine. They are trying to see whether a second-generation version of the Apollo engine could produce even more thrust and be operated with a throttle for deep-space exploration.

    There are no plans to send the old engine into space, but it could become a template for a new generation of motors incorporating parts of its design.

    In NASA-speak, the old 18-foot-tall motor is called an F-1 engine. During moon missions, five of them were arranged at the base of the 363-foot-tall Saturn V system and fired together to power the rocket off the ground toward Earth orbit.

    Thursday's test used one part of the engine, the gas generator, which powers the machinery to pump propellant into the main rocket chamber. It doesn't produce the massive orange flame or clouds of smoke like that of a whole F-1, but the sound was deafening as engineers fired the mechanism in an outdoor test stand on a cool, sunny afternoon.

    The device produced a plume that resembled a blow torch the size of two buses and set fire to a grassy area, which was quickly extinguished.

    "It's not small," Case said. "It's pretty beefy on its own."

    And just like during the Apollo days, people in north Alabama heard rockets thundering in the distance during tests at Marshall.

    "My wife and daughter were in our front yard and she said they could hear it, which was pretty cool," Case said after an earlier test. "We live about 15 miles away."

    A single F-1 engine can produce 1.5 million pounds of thrust using a fuel composed of liquid oxygen and refined kerosene, which was not used in the space shuttle.

    The tests were conducted at Marshall in a project conducted with Dynetics Inc. and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, which are studying NASA's possibilities for deep-space missions years from now. The space agency plans to use commercial launches to reach low Earth orbit; larger rockets are required to escape the planet's gravity.

    R.H. Coates, an engineer who works with Case in Marshall's liquid propulsion office, said young engineers can learn a lot from the work done by predecessors using slide-rules in the 1960s, but no one wants to simply rebuild the old Saturn V engine.

    "This wouldn't be your daddy's F-1," Coates said. "We'd use new materials and try to simplify it, update it."

    Case started at Marshall as a high school intern in 2002 and has been working there since graduating from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2008. He said today's technology allows things that weren't possible during the 1960s, but he has been impressed by what he learned taking apart the unused Apollo 11 engine.

    Engine No. F-6049 didn't fit properly on the Apollo 11 rocket, but it is invaluable now as a testing tool. Coates said a total of 85 F-1 engines were used on 17 Apollo flights without a single failure.

    About a dozen F-1 engines remain in Huntsville, Ala., home of NASA's main propulsion center, and others are located elsewhere. Most are on display. Case said engineers used engine No. F-6049 for the tests because it was the most complete.

    "It is really an excellent booster," he said. "The guys in Apollo had it right."

    Catholic Hospital Under Fire for Arguing That Fetuses Aren't People

    Under Colorado law, a fetus is not a person, but Catholic leaders say that's no excuse for one of their hospitals to use that argument to win a legal battle. The debate comes from a lawsuit filed by a man whose wife and unborn twins died at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colorado. She was seven months preagent at the time and the lawsuit alleges that the hospital was liable for wrongful death because they failed to perform a Cesarean section to save the twins. The case is currently being appealed to the State Supreme Court

    In earlier trials, the hospital's lawyers have argued they aren't liable for the death of the twins, because Colorado law states that a fetus is not a person. And legally, they've been vindicated. Two lower courts ruled in their favor. However, many abortion rights advocates have noted the?hypocrisy?of a staunchly pro-life organization?changing its attitude when it's economically?convenient.?

    More importantly, Catholics have noticed as well, and many are outraged that the hospital would defy Church teachings simply to win a legal battle. William Donahoe of the Catholic League lashed out at the?hospital?on CNN this morning, saying they should be stripped of their Catholic status and that anyone who defies the "natural law" of the Church just to save money is a "harlot." Local bishops have?promised?to review the case, with the Archbishop of Denver saying in a statement that, "No Catholic institution may legitimately work to undermine fundamental human dignity." When other Catholic hospitals are attacked for refusing to perform abortions, and others for refusing to save a fetus, there's simply no side of this issue that won't bring anger down on the Church.

    I join all those marching for life from afar, and pray that political leaders will protect the unborn and promote a culture of life.

    Gold hits nearly 2-week low as econ data saps demand

    SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Gold hit its lowest level in nearly two weeks on Friday, after upbeat data from the world's top economies suggested a global recovery is gaining traction, sapping demand for the metal.

    Spot gold is the only precious metal in the red so far this year, down 0.4 percent from the end of 2012, while precious metals with industrial applications, including silver, platinum and palladium, have all risen in tandem with investor confidence in the economy.

    Manufacturing in China and the United States grew this month at the fastest pace in about two years, while data suggesting German growth picked up boosted hopes for a swifter euro zone recovery.

    Together with data showing a five-year low in U.S. jobless claims last week, the data sent Standard & Poor's 500 index to a seven straight session of gains on Thursday.

    "It now seems that the stronger tone in global equity markets, coupled with a notable easing in European and US market tensions, is leading to short-term pressure on gold," said Ed Meir, an analyst at INTL FCStone, in a research note.

    "We think (this) will continue for a little while longer given that negative chart picture are also contributing to the sloppier tone," he said.

    Spot gold fell to $1,663.11 an ounce, its lowest in nearly two weeks. By 0320 GMT, it pared losses to trade flat at $1,667.44, headed for a weekly decline of nearly 1 percent, its sharpest loss in about a month.

    U.S. gold inched down 0.2 percent to $1,667.30.

    Though the 200-day moving average, at just below $1,663, provided some support for spot gold, technical analysis suggested that prices could test the lower level of $1,661, and possibly ease to the January 4 low of $1,625.79 over the next four weeks.

    The price slump has triggered some physical buying interest, but many buyers were holding the purse strings on the sidelines of the market, with hopes that prices would further decline.

    "There aren't too many orders, because prices are not low enough," said a Singapore-based dealer, expecting a further drop to $1,635 level to be a bigger draw to buyers.

    Supportive of gold prices, Russia's central bank said it will continue to buy gold as it seeks to diversify its foreign reserves away from paper assets it views as risky.

    Spot platinum inched up 0.2 percent to $1,680.99, on course for a 0.8-percent weekly gain, extending its winning streak to a fourth week, its longest in a year.

    Supernova-powered bow shock creates cosmic spectacle

    NOW that's one groovy star. Seen speeding like a bullet through a cloud of dust and gas, the massive star Zeta Ophiuchi is creating a colourful wave known as a bow shock. This happens because the star's motion is compressing dust grains like water at the bow of a ship.

    To the naked eye Zeta Ophiuchi is a placid dot parked in the constellation Ophiuchus. But the infrared vision of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope shows how the shooting star is electrifying its surroundings. It creates a scene akin to a UV-triggered fluorescent blacklight poster, says Spitzer image specialist Robert Hurt of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

    In this picture infrared wavelengths have been translated into visible ones, with shorter waves in blue, middle waves in green and longer ones in red. That's why the bright stars glitter like sapphires, while small dust grains fluoresce in a faint teal as they absorb Zeta Ophiuchi's light. Red in the bow shock comes from the larger, hotter dust grains that can survive the star's fierce radiation.

    Given its speed and direction, astronomers think the star once orbited an even heftier companion. But the biggest stars live fast and die young, and its partner exploded in a violent supernova blast that sent Zeta Ophiuchi careening away at a whopping 87,000 kilometres per hour.

    This isn't the first or even the fastest runaway but it is perhaps one of the most detailed. "Here you have a star hurtling through space and having a huge impact on its environment," says Hurt. "It really gives you a general sense of how everything is interconnected."

    Childhood diagnosis of ADHD increased dramatically over 9-year period

    Jan. 21, 2013 ? The rate of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder rose dramatically between 2001 and 2010, with non-Hispanic white children having the highest diagnosis rates, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics (formerly Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine). The study also showed there was a 90 percent increase in the diagnosis of ADHD among non-Hispanic black girls during the same nine-year period.

    The study examined the electronic health records of nearly 850,000 ethnically diverse children, aged 5 to 11 years, who received care at Kaiser Permanente Southern California between 2001 and 2010. It found that among these children, 4.9 percent, or 39,200, had a diagnosis of ADHD, with white and black children more likely to be diagnosed with the neurobehavioral disorder than Hispanics and Asian/Pacific Islander children. For instance, in 2010, 5.6 percent of white children in the study had an ADHD diagnosis; 4.1 percent of blacks; 2.5 percent of Hispanics; and 1.2 percent of Asian/Pacific Islanders.

    The study also examined increases in the rates of first-time ADHD diagnosis. Researchers found that the incidence of newly diagnosed ADHD cases rose from 2.5 percent in 2001 to 3.1 percent in 2010 -- a relative increase of 24 percent. Black children showed the greatest increase in ADHD incidence, from 2.6 percent of all black children 5 to 11 years of age in 2001 to 4.1 percent in 2010, a 70 percent relative increase. Rates among Hispanic children showed a 60 percent relative increase, from 1.7 percent in 2001 to 2.5 percent in 2010. White children showed a 30 percent relative increase, from 4.7 percent in 2001 to 5.6 percent in 2010, while rates for Asian/Pacific Islander children and other racial groups remained unchanged over time.

    "Our study findings suggest that there may be a large number of factors that affect ADHD diagnosis rates, including cultural factors that may influence the treatment-seeking behavior of some groups," said study lead author Darios Getahun, MD, PhD, from Kaiser Permanente Southern California's Department of Research & Evaluation. "These findings are particularly solid given that our study relied on clinical diagnoses of ADHD based on the criteria specified within the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and that it represents a large and ethnically diverse population that can be generalized to other populations."

    In addition, the study found that boys were three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls. Higher family incomes also were associated with the likelihood of ADHD diagnosis; children from families with a household income of more than $30,000 a year were nearly 20 percent more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than children from families making less $30,000.

    According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood. The CDC estimates that between 4 percent and 12 percent of school-aged children have the disorder, which generates health care costs of between $36 billion and $52 billion per year. Children with ADHD are more likely to experience learning problems, miss school, become injured and experience troublesome relationships with family members and peers, according to the researchers.

    "While the reasons for increasing ADHD rates are not well understood, contributing factors may include heightened awareness of ADHD among parents and physicians, which could have led to increased screening and treatment," said Dr. Getahun. "This variability may indicate the need for different allocation of resources for ADHD prevention programs, and may point to new risk factors or inequalities in care."

    This study is part of Kaiser Permanente's broader efforts to deliver transformational health research regarding the impacts of ADHD. One recent Kaiser Permanente study found an association between conditions in which the prenatal brain is deprived of oxygen and the risk of ADHD in children and adults.

    And last December, a Kaiser Permanente study found little evidence of increased risk of heart attack, sudden cardiac death or stroke associated with use of medications used primarily to treat ADHD. The population-based study included more than 150,000 adults aged 25 to 64 years who used ADHD medications.

    These studies are made possible in part by Kaiser Permanente's extensive electronic health record system, one of the largest private systems in the world. The organization's integrated model and electronic health record system securely connects 9 million people, 611 medical offices, and 37 hospitals, linking patients with their health care teams, their personal health information and the latest medical knowledge. The system coordinates patient care between the physician's office, the hospital, radiology, the laboratory and the pharmacy, and helps eliminate the pitfalls of incomplete, missing, or unreadable charts. It also connects Kaiser Permanente's researchers to one of the most extensive collections of longitudinal and de-identified medical data available, facilitating studies and important medical discoveries that shape the future of health and care delivery for patients and the medical community.

    New findings on mortality of individuals with schizophrenia

    Jan. 21, 2013 ? A new study from Lund University in Sweden shows that the average life expectancy of men and women with schizophrenia is 15 years and 12 years shorter respectively than for those who do not suffer from the disease. The study has been carried out in collaboration with Stanford University in the US.

    The reasons why people with schizophrenia have a shorter life expectancy have previously been unknown, but have been much discussed in recent years. The research report that has now been published shows that individuals with schizophrenia are more likely to die of two major diseases.

    The study followed over six million individuals from 2003 to 2009, of whom 8 277 had schizophrenia, by analysing the Swedish population and health registers.

    The results show that people with schizophrenia had contact with the health service over twice as often as people without the condition, but they were no more likely to be diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or cancer.

    "Yet we saw an opposing pattern of death from these diseases. It is clear that the health service is failing to diagnose cardiovascular disease and cancer in these patients," says Jan Sundquist, general practitioner and professor at the Centre for Primary Health Care Research at Lund University.

    Women with schizophrenia were 3.3 times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease and men 2.2 times more likely. Women with schizophrenia were 1.7 times more likely to die of cancer while men were 1.4 times more likely, compared with those without schizophrenia. Only 26.3% of the men with schizophrenia who died of cardiovascular disease had been diagnosed before their deaths, compared with 43.7% of the men who did not have schizophrenia.

    "It is unacceptable that such a vulnerable group of people, who also have extensive documented contact with the health service, should die prematurely of conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer -- diseases that should be preventable," says Professor Sundquist. "A much greater degree of diagnostic and preventive measures could be put in place for this vulnerable group in our society."

    Asus 'interested' in making Windows Phones, considering Padfone concept for Windows 8

    Asus has revealed that the company is considering future smartphones running on Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Benson Lin, corporate vice president of mobile communication products at Asus, says the firm is "interested in making Windows Phones," but there's no timeline on when they'll be released.

    Asus appears to be considering its Padfone concept for Windows too. "I think it makes sense for Windows 8," says Lin. At present, manufacturers have to choose between Windows Phone or Windows 8 on smartphones and tablets respectively, making it difficult to create a Padfone running on Windows. The unique Padfone product works as a smartphone that then docks into the back of a tablet, turning the entire device into a tablet running from the smartphone hardware and OS.

    Microsoft's specifications for Windows Phone and Windows 8 are fairly strict, meaning we haven't seen 7- or 10-inch Windows Phone devices, nor are there 4- or 5-inch Windows 8 machines. That might be about to change with an update codenamed Windows Blue. The new OS is said to be focused on bringing Windows 8 down to smaller screen sizes and creating more interoperability between Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Windows Blue is on course to ship mid-2013.

    LG looking to move 75M with Windows Phone 8, Optimus leading the way

    LG didn't come out swinging at CES 2013 with a new phone, but the Korean company is still gearing up for a record year of sales.

    According to a report from the Korean Times, LG plans to sell 75 million phones, 20 million more than 2012, over the next 349 days.

    Of those handsets, 45 million are expected to be smartphones with budget and feature phones filling out the rest. So many phones sales would be a new high for the company.

    To boost its phone numbers in the new year, LG apparently has designs to enter into the Window Phone 8 game, an unnamed exec at an LG partner company told the Times. Coupled with a few new Optimuses, and LG could hit that many-million mark.

    Things get murky

    The presumed next-in-line phone for LG is the Optimus G2, which is said to sport a screen measuring at least 5 inches, if not 5.5-inches.

    Many signs pointed to a CES debut for the phone but none of those nods panned out.

    LG did reveal during its press conference that it plans to announce at least one top-tier phone during next month's Mobile World Congress, though it might not be the Optimus G2.

    Reports surfaced earlier this week that the new G won't see the light of day until the fall, coming at around the same time the first iteration turns 1-year old.

    Instead, LG might introduce a "stopgap" device at the Barcelona gathering.

    That phone, codenamed "GK," is said to have a 5.5-inch display and quad-core processor.

    The hold-up on the G2 could be LG's desire to pack it with Android: Key Lime Pie while still wanting to get the jump on Samsung's Galaxy SIV and Apple's next iPhone, whether it's the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 or a budget handset.

    If guessing is LG's game, it's certainly proving good at it. We're sure to hear more rumors and reports in the weeks leading up to MWC, but with that 75 million figure in mind, LG has some momentum going into the year with hopes of new flagships and Windows Phone 8 handsets.

    TechRadar asked LG for comment on its 2013 phone plans and while we don't expect much will be revealed, we'll update this story if and when the company offers a response.
