The Canadian penny will soon be a relic of the past.

The Canadians are doing what the U.S. has not been able to accomplish: Eliminating the money-losing penny.

The Canadian government has announced that it will stop distributing the Canadian penny beginning in the fall, with the gradual goal of removing it from circulation.

The move, unveiled as part of the Canadian government?s overall budget proposal, comes down to cold, hard cash. That is, the cash that can be saved by removing the penny from circulation.

The government said it expects it can save about $11 million Canadian dollars (about?$11 million USD) a year by not supplying the penny, because the cost to produce a penny is more than the penny?s face value.

The Canadian government said in a release that, by contrast, the other coins it makes are worth more than the cost of production.

The government said people can continue to use pennies for as long as they want, and non-cash transactions will still go to the penny. But as they gradually are removed from circulation, people should begin rounding to the nearest denomination. The government laid out ways to do that.

The United States is in the same situation when it comes to coin making, but we have yet to eliminate any of our beloved coins.

It takes about 2.4 cents to make a U.S.?penny, and a whopping 11.18 cents to make a nickel. That?s why the U.S. Treasury secretary has proposed cheaper manufacturing and administrative methods aimed at reducing production costs.

The Canadians said they are joining the ranks of other countries that have removed their lowest-denomination coin from circulation, including Australia, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Federal health authorities have significantly raised their estimate of the prevalence of autism in children, concluding in a new study of 8-year-olds that 1 in 88 has some form of the disorder.

The analysis, based on a review of tens of thousands of health and school records in 14 states, was released yesterday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the latest in a series of studies showing autism rates climbing dramatically over the past decade. The previous estimate of the incidence of autism was 1 in 110.

Dr. Daniel Geschwind, an autism expert at UCLA, said he was initially surprised by the size of the increase ? 25 percent in two years. ?But when I looked at what seems to be driving it, it made total sense,? he said.

Geschwind and others said vast differences in the rates among states included in the study are almost certainly a reflection of social and cultural factors that influence who gets a diagnosis.

?Public awareness has gone up, and case identification has gotten better,? said Dr. Young-Shin Kim, an autism expert at Yale University.

In its first analysis, using data from 2000, it estimated that 1 in 150 children had some form of the disorder. By 2006, it was 1 in 110.

The latest estimate of 1 in 88, based on 2008 data, is already being touted as evidence that autism is an epidemic and that something in the environment is driving it.

Mark Roithmayr, president of the advocacy group Autism Speaks, called for more government funding for research and treatment.

?Inevitably, when these statistics come out, the question is, what is driving the increase?? said Roithmayr. Better diagnoses, broader diagnostic criteria and higher awareness account for about half the rise, he estimated.

Movie Review: &#39;Mirror Mirror&#39; ? CBS Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Mirror, mirror, on the screen, who is now the Queen of Mean?

Why, Julia Roberts, that?s who!

And that?s because her rendering of the villainess in the latest version of ?Snow White? is, like the film itself, twisted and fractured and not exactly wonderful but watchable and memorable.

Mirror Mirror, the first of this year?s two live-action films based on the ?Snow White? story (the other is the heavier, more action-oriented Snow White & the Huntsman, with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, due in June) is an enchanting, visually splendiferous reimagining of the classic ?Snow White? fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.

And the PG-rated concoction is sweet enough for kids and ex-kids of pretty much all ages without getting all syrupy about it.? Imagine that!

Roberts stars as the psychopathically insecure and beauty-obsessed Queen Clementianna, an enchantress and bully who schemes to gain control of the throne that would otherwise go to the 18-year-old princess, Snow White, her stepdaughter, played by Lily Collins, whom the queen describes as having ?skin as white as snow and hair as dark as night.?

As for the king, played by Sean Bean, who took off in a time of trouble to save the kingdom, he?s long gone and still missing, presumably dead in the haunted forest.

With him away, it?s been no problem for the ruthless queen to seize control of the kingdom, having locked the resented and despised princess in her room and told the villagers that her stepdaughter is a deformed monster.

Yep, you?re right ? this is not your grandmother?s ?Snow White.?

When the wealthy and affable Prince Andrew Alcott, played by Armie Hammer, visits the bankrupted (thanks to the queen?s extravagance) kingdom, the queen decides to marry him.? But as soon as he gets a glimpse of Snow White, he falls for the princess and vice versa.

Thus does the jealous and wicked queen, a proponent of dark magic, banish Snow White to the dark forest, ordering her death and intending that the beast that resides there will do away with her.

Nathan Lane plays Brighton, the queen?s bumbling servant, who will even come to join the insect world (don?t ask).?? He is ordered by the queen to murder Snow White, but he takes her to the forest and lets her go.

That?s when a band of seven forest-dwelling little people ? not noticeably happy, sleepy, grumpy, dopey, sneezy, bashful or in need of a doc ? who are highway robbers by trade, rescue her and train her to fight back.

Now, Snow White, turning into a proactive princess, has the rebellious bandit-dwarf allies ? and the means ? to reclaim her birthright, rescue the villagers from poverty, and win back the prince from the queen.

Indian director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall, Immortals), a visionary who doesn?t always treat dedicated storytelling as a priority, presents yet another highly stylized, lushly shot, and lavishly costumed world: a cornucopia of eye candy.

But this time, in addition to the brighter-than-bright landscapes and dreamscapes, he indulges in cartoonish, not-quite-right sight gags, and awkwardly broad physical comedy, yet delivers a selfconsciously playful, enjoyable-in-spite-of-itself slapstick romp.

The screenplay, by Melissa Wallack and Jason Keller, attempts a grinning spin on the classic tale and succeeds to a point: that is, it?s fitfully amusing without really beingh funny.

This director, whose energy goes into visual composition and costuming at the expense of timing and technique, does not have a flair for comedy, even if he does breathe new life into an old tale.

Roberts seems to be having a royal time of it, playing against type as the self-obsessed and sardonic queen, masterfully mixing charm and deviousness.

The dazzling and graceful Collins, who would appear to be a can?t-miss future star, gives us an appealing protagonist for this female-empowerment tale.

And Hammer (another can?t-miss star-to-be) and Lane make campily cackle-worthy comedic contributions as well.

As for the Bollywood-meets-Hollywood ending, well, it?s a questionable directorial indulgence, but it?s too late to either damage or rescue the film.

So we?ll banish 2? stars out of 4 for this moderately charming, tongue-in-cheek, woodland fantasy that serves as a revisionist fairy tale, a sophisticated update, and a fair family film.

Think of Mirror Mirror as Grimm without the grim.

&#39;Freezing&#39; Secondary Breast Cancer Tumors Shows Promise - Drugs ...

MONDAY March 26, 2012 -- In a small and preliminary study, researchers report that they successfully froze secondary tumors in patients with incurable breast cancer.

The findings raise the prospect of a potential new treatment for metastatic tumors in individual patients, although the research is in the very early stages.

"This therapy provides a minimal rate of cancer recurrence and no major complications," study co-author Dr. Peter Littrup, director of imaging core and radiology research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, said in a news release from the Society of Interventional Radiology.

The study is scheduled to be presented Wednesday at the society's annual meeting in San Francisco. Research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

"This is a preliminary study, and at this point we're hoping that the evidence could be a stepping stone for a bigger study to look at more patients," Littrup said. "If we can get more data that supports percutaneous cryoablation for metastatic breast cancer, it could be a huge finding."

In percutaneous cryoablation, tiny probes insert pressurized argon gas into tumors and kill them by turning them into balls of ice.

The eight patients in the study had stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, meaning their tumors had spread widely from the breast. The tumors frequently appear in organs such as the liver, lungs, bones and kidneys.

In stage 4, the disease is considered incurable.

"At this point, treatments are considered palliative -- with the intent to keep metastases at bay while hopefully providing individuals more time and improved quality of life, rather than a complete cure," Littrup said.

"Cryoablation as a targeted therapy is beneficial because it can significantly reduce discomfort and incidence of disease," Littrup said. "It's a much better option, we think, than surgery -- especially since many metastatic patients are not candidates for surgery -- and it may potentially lead to longer survival."

The eight patients in the study lived for an average of 46 months, and two survived for at least five years.

Dr. Hannah Linden, an oncology specialist and assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, said it's too early to know whether the treatment works since it hasn't been compared to other therapies.

"Many patients with metastatic breast cancer live a long time with gentle treatments, yet other patients who have relatively resistant tumors do poorly," she said. "While the idea of freezing a tumor to prevent it from growing is feasible and exciting, it is not proven that such an approach actually 'cures' patients or provides long-term benefit."

Although similar treatments target secondary tumors, she added, they "do not address the systemic problem of metastatic cancer. So, while it seems good to 'kill' the metastasis, the cancer is still lurking."

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, killing nearly 370,000 people worldwide each year. Approximately 10,000 to 15,000 new cases of stage 4 breast cancer occur in the United States each year, Littrup noted.

Francine and Delores asked for help in losing weight. Sensibly. Both had tried every diet they?d come across for several decades and nothing had changed them permanently. Francine was in her 60?s and didn?t do any kind of exercise. Delores was in her 40?s and worked out a lot at the gym.

?

1) analyze the situation

?

Francine figured she was about 60 pounds overweight. That?s a rough estimate based on how much she weighed 40 years ago when she was fit and liked her shape. She wanted the excess weight to leave so that she would look good in clothing and feel better about herself.

?

Delores was about 30 pounds overweight and wanted to surprise her husband for their 20th anniversary ? he was out of the country for two months so it would really be a surprise!

?

Both women were pear shaped with large thighs and fat pads on the hips and lower abdomen ? LL. And they both craved dairy products all the time, eating them at least daily.

?

2) assemble the equipment

?

I suggested they invest in four items:

• good walking shoes
• a digital scale for weighing food
• a digital scale for weighing themselves that included bone density
• a smallish spiral notebook

The shoes were for walking around the neighborhood, the food scale to reveal how many calories they?d been eating, the people scale so they could see progress on a daily basis, and the notebook to keep track of their food and drink intake and any cravings or problems they encountered.

3) prepare for the assault

?

We spent the next three days going over the LeftLemon.com website to make sure they understood the two main ways to make a meal work:

• properly combine foods (don?t eat starchy foods with heavy protein foods in the same meal)
• balance each meal (30/30/40)

They also wrote down all of their food and drink intake for those three days, along with cravings, aches and pains, tiredness, and all other feelings they had. We used the Energy Cycle chart to determine they both had some LO problems going on, and Delores had 4C problems because of her stress levels.

?

They had a lot of questions, mainly asking why this way of eating (Francine didn?t like the word ?diet?) would work when so many others had either failed or made them sick. ?Eating for health? was my answer to most of those questions.

?

It isn?t about losing weight ? it?s about gaining health.

?

It was easy to see why they had held onto those extra pounds when we analyzed the diet diaries on the third day. Both were surprised to find out they were eating well over 2000 calories most days, with a ?good day? coming in at around 1400 calories.

?

4) launch

?

Both women were to begin each day with the juice of one lemon ? straight. No water or juice added, just the juice.

?

Then they would move for twenty minutes, raising their breathing rate some but not too much. Francine was to go for a walk. Not a hard walk, but not an amble either. Just move her body, paying attention to posture, working up to 20 minutes. Delores went for a run ? an easy run for her. She needed to calm down and relax through exercise.

?

On odd-numbered days they did the walk/run, on even-numbered days they did a stretching and free-weights workout lasting about 20 minutes. Francine used an exercise ball to do her stretching and strengthening exercises. Delores chose to do hers in the pool at the gym. They each chose one day each week to rest.

?

The first three days they ate 1200 calories, broken into three meals of about equal amounts of calories. Both had made marinated greens the day before, and found that balancing their meals made it easier to eat this way because the additional oils helped them to not get hungry.

?

Then they continued to weigh themselves each morning and wrote down anything unusual in their diet diaries for another month.

The main thing that worked for them without counting calories was to have a collection of meal plans that were balanced, properly combined, and the right amount of calories for them. The favorite breakfast was fruit with some nuts, or fruit with yogurt or cheese. Lunches were leftovers from dinners planned weekly, but one day each week they met at a restaurant to encourage each other. The easy way for them to eat out was at a sandwich and soup place ? they would order the sandwich on a plate, hold the bread. Or sometimes they would eat a bowl of soup with a salad on the side. Or side dishes of guacamole and hummus and eat them with a spoon.

Neither of them are finished with their weight loss, but they?ve both quit trying to lose weight. Why? Because they are eating for health, weighing weekly to make sure they?re still headed in the right direction.

Average tax refund so far: about $3,000

The IRS has already handed out tens of millions of income tax refunds, and the average refund amount is about?$3,000.

IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman told a House subcommittee Thursday that the IRS had received more than 70 million individual tax returns as of March 10, up about 5 percent from the same time last year.

Shulman said the IRS had issued 59.2 million refunds as of March 10, for a total of $174 billion.

The $3,000 refunds are about the same as last year, according to Shulman?s testimony before a Ways and Means subcommittee.

If you?re more of a procrastinator than an early bird, don?t worry: You still have some time. The tax due?datehas been extended to April 17 this year.

BioShaft Water Technology (OTCBB: BSHF) Signs Contracts in USA, Japan and Saudi Arabia

Austin, TX 3/12/12 (StreetBeat) -- BioShaft Water Technology Inc. (BioShaft) (OTCBB:BSHF) has signed three contracts that will see the company's innovative wastewater treatment systems installed for customers in the United States, Japan and the Middle East.

The orders include an industrial system to be installed at a brewery in Fredericksburg Texas, a pilot T-MBBR (BioShaft Turbo Moving Bed Bioreactor) industrial packaged unit for a partner in Japan, and a T-MBBR for a domestic wastewater facility in the Middle East.

Walter Zurawick, President of BioShaft, stated, "These are key orders, as they cover both the municipal market, and industrial market with strategic locations, The United States, Japan, and the Middle East."

The orders are:

PBC Brewery located in Fredericksburg, Texas, which purchased a total solution for its wastewater. BioShaft will provide a turnkey, Anaerobic/Aerobic Digester System, which will enable the company to land apply their wastewater effluent or reuse it for specific rinse applications in the brewery.

Kobelco-Eco, located in Kobe, Japan, is an integrated entity focusing on environmental solutions in Japan. Kobelco was looking for a sustainable solution with the capability to treat medium to high strength wastewater, with requirements such as a small footprint, low operational cost, and low capital cost with a simple design and easily expandable. With several clients in Japan having these requirements, Kobelco contacted BioShaft, and an industrial packaged unit was delivered to their client in Japan.

Ministry of Defense Arabia (MODA), located in Saudi Arabia. BioShaft technology was specified by MODA for the treatment of a large military base at Har-Al Bateen, near the capital city of Riyadh. The plant is the first phase of a much larger facility to be tendered later in 2012. Current flow is 3.7 MGD (Million Gallon per Day), with effluent suitable for irrigation reuse.

BioShaft recently opened an office in Florida to better service clients in Eastern North America. The company also launched a new Industrial Product at WEFTEC exhibition in Los Angeles, Ca. in 2011 which has resulted in a great deal of sales activity.
